Flint Hills Area Transportation Agency is Offering an Expanded Paid Training Program for Bus Operators
CDL Bus Operator with Passenger Endorsement Training Program
We will help participants receive on the job driving experience and obtain their Class C commercial driver's license (CDL - C) with Passenger Endorsement.
Participants chosen for this program will be a Temporary Student Trainee while in the training. The program will include driving a passenger van on our Demand Response routes, hands-on instruction and online practice training intended to provide the essential skills and knowledge required to operate a transit bus safely and independently upon program completion. Upon successful completion of this program, the Student Trainee may be transitioned to a full-time or a part-time Bus Operator position.
Student Trainees will be paid $14.00/hour for the training hours outlined below.
FHATA will reimburse the fees for the Written test and the Drive/Skills test. Must remain employed for 6 months as a Bus Operator or the employee will pay back the testing fees in an amount based on the number of months worked.

Duration of the Program:
The overall program consists of classroom, hands-on driving and online practice training.
Training provided for the Written CDL – C and P Endorsement Test. The Student Trainee must obtain a Kansas Class C Commercial Learner's Permit and P Endorsement Permit within the first 30 days as a Student Trainee.
Training provided for the CDL – C and P Endorsement Drive/Skills Test. After attaining the Learner’s Permits, the Student Trainee must pass the CDL Class - C with Passenger Endorsement driving/skills test within the first 90 days as a Student Trainee.
Please note that testing must be arranged with the State of Kansas Motor Vehicle Department. It may take several weeks or longer to get an appointment for testing with the State DMV, and during such time waiting for an appointment, trainees will be assigned to Demand Response driving.

CDL Class - C with Passenger Endorsement Bus Operators
ATA Bus Operators are an important part of what keeps the Flint Hills region moving. Every day, Bus Operators help our riders reach their destinations safely by providing services in Riley County, Geary County, and parts of Pottawatomie County.
The CDL – C Bus Operator drives a 20-passenger vehicle and collects fares/tickets. The Bus Operator complies with the assigned schedule, provides prompt, courteous, professional customer service, ensures passenger safety, and complies with applicable Agency, City, County, State and Federal regulations relating to transporting passengers.
Starting pay is $16.50 per hour if candidate has 1 year of experience driving passengers and possesses a CDL and P Endorsement Driver’s License.
Starting pay is $15.05 per hour if candidate possesses a CDL and P Endorsement Driver’s License but has less than 1 year of experience driving with passengers.
Sign on bonus - $2000:
Paid for full-time hires who have a CDL and P Endorsement.
Half is paid on the first paycheck (within 30 days of employment).
Remaining half is paid after 1 year of satisfactory performance.
Must remain employed for 6 months or the employee will pay back the initial payment in an amount based on the number of months worked.
Student Trainee and Bus Operator Requirements:
Must be able to work all shifts including evenings and weekends
High School Diploma or equivalent
Insurance requirement is a minimum 21 years of age
Must pass a background check, drug screen, and Physical Capacity Profile.
Must obtain a Kansas Department of Transportation, (KDOT), Medical Examiner’s Certificate prior to beginning the program, and retain for duration of employment, if hired.
Must have a clean MVR for the past 3 years
